A Guide to Fish Pills

If you’re looking for fish pills, you are probably interested in the health benefits of omega 3 fatty acids.  There are other nutrients found in the fish that we eat.  In fact, seafood in general is highly nutritious.  But, most of those nutrients can be found in other foods, if seafood is not available.  Several kinds of omega 3 fatty acids, including EPA, DPA and DHA are only found in seafood, today.

At one time, there may have been other dietary sources, such as wild game and fowl.  But, since people don’t generally eat those kinds of things today, they have never been evaluated for their nutritional value, at least not by scientists.

It makes sense that bear, duck and other game would contain the same nutrients that are found in the fish that they eat.  Like the fish themselves, they could also get DHA and EPA from seaweed and possibly marine algae.

There are some edible types of seaweed that contain small amounts of EPA, but not enough to be considered good dietary sources.  The supplement industry grows marine algae in bioreactors to provide DHA for vegans, but that could not be considered a natural dietary source.

Modern researchers have proven that DHA and EPA have natural anti-inflammatory activity, which explains why they would be beneficial for arthritis and other painful conditions.  Historically, the oils were used for digestive health, to reduce constipation and for other purposes.  Modern research has proven they are beneficial for inflammatory bowel diseases and other digestive problems.

But, the main reason that people take fish pills containing those oils today is

because of the benefits to the heart and cardiovascular system.  Mountains of research have shown that people with a high intake of omega 3 fatty acids have a lower incidence of heart disease, heart attacks and death from cardiovascular problems.

Reduced inflammation is one of the reasons the nutritional supplement is good for heart health.  Inflammation in the arteries causes them to harden.  As they become less flexible, the blood pressure rises and eventually there may be a complete or partial blockage.

Other heart healthy benefits of fish pills have to do with their ability to lower blood triglycerides (fats in the bloodstream).  They improve levels of good HDL cholesterol, which leads to a decrease in bad LDL cholesterol.
