Introduction of Tea

Tea is the common name for the plant Camellia sinensis.  It is also the name given to a beverage that is prepared by using the leaves, leaf buds and internodes of this plant.  The leaves are first cured and then are added into boiling water to prepare the beverage.  It is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. The cool, slightly bitter, astringent flavor is enjoyed by many.  

It is classified depending on the method of cultivation and processing into white tea, yellow tea, green tea, oolong tea, black tea, post-fermented tea.  Some teas have been enhanced through additives or special processing.  Tea contains antioxidants, small amounts of theobromine and theophylline, fluoride. Dry tea has more caffeine. It has no carbohydrates, fat, or protein.

Tea is the most popular drink in the world in terms of consumption.  India is the world’s largest tea-drinking nation. The beverage is made by adding leaves to boiling water.  Sometimes it is had with milk.  

It is often had at high class social events in many cultures. In many cultures it is served to guests.  

The

health benefits of tea are a controversial topic.   Recent studies reveal that it is associated with cell-mediated immune response, it improves beneficial intestinal microflora; it is believed to prevent dental caries due to presence of fluorine, normalize blood pressure, and prevent coronary artery disease and diabetes as it regulates the lipid content and glucose content in blood.  Tea possesses germicidal and germistatic action. It also contains antioxidants which reduces the risk of cancer.
